Oil Seal & O-Ring Quick Reference — Materials & Standards
Oil seals (radial shaft seals) and O-rings cover most industrial sealing needs. Material selection drives application — NBR is the workshop default; Viton (FKM) is essential for hydrocarbon, high-temperature or chemical service. AIMS stocks AS 1646 / ISO 3601 / ISO 6194 standards in metric, imperial and BS series.
| Seal Type | Standard | Material Options | Temperature Range | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil Seal (Single Lip) | AS 1646.5 / ISO 6194 | NBR, Viton (FKM) | NBR: -30 to 100 °C · Viton: -20 to 200 °C | Standard rotating shaft, dust + oil retention |
| Oil Seal (Double Lip) | AS 1646.5 / ISO 6194 | NBR, Viton (FKM) | Same as single lip | Dirty environments, higher dust protection |
| V-Ring Seal | — | NBR, FKM | NBR: -40 to 100 °C | Secondary seal in slurry, dust, water spray |
| O-Ring (Metric) | AS 1646.10 / ISO 3601 | NBR (70 Shore), Viton (FKM 75 Shore), EPDM, Silicone | NBR: -30 to 100 °C · Viton: -20 to 200 °C | Static + dynamic sealing across hydraulic/pneumatic/process |
| O-Ring (BS Series) | BS 1806 / SAE AS568 | NBR, Viton, EPDM, Silicone | Per compound | British/US-origin hydraulic and pneumatic equipment |
| X-Ring (Quad-Ring) | — | NBR, FKM | Per compound | Dynamic sealing — better wear life than standard O-ring |

Oil Seals & O-Rings — Rotating Shaft Seals & Static Sealing
Oil seals (lip seals, radial shaft seals) and O-rings are the two most common industrial sealing components — used to keep oil and grease inside, contaminants and moisture outside, of bearings, gearboxes, pumps and rotating shaft assemblies. AIMS Industrial stocks oil seals and O-rings in NBR (nitrile) and Viton (FKM) compounds across metric, imperial and BS series, manufactured to AS 1646.10 / ISO 3601 and AS 1646.5 / ISO 6194 dimensional standards.
For elastomer compound selection, chemical compatibility (including our 82-chemical resistance chart) and oil seal application notes, see our O-ring guide.

Oil seals (radial shaft seals)
Oil seals — also called radial shaft seals, lip seals or rotary shaft seals — prevent lubricant escape and contaminant ingress in rotating shaft assemblies such as gearboxes, pumps, motors and axles. AIMS stocks metric and imperial oil seals in single and double lip configurations, with metal-cased and rubber-cased designs across NBR (standard) and Viton (high-temperature, chemical-resistant) compounds. Standard service temperature range is -40 °C to +120 °C for NBR seals and up to +200 °C for Viton seals — required where NBR would harden or chemically degrade in service. SKF Speedi-Sleeves are stocked for restoring worn shaft journals when full shaft replacement is not viable.
O-rings — static and dynamic sealing
O-rings provide both static sealing (between two non-moving surfaces such as flange faces, cap-on-housing assemblies and hydraulic-cylinder end caps) and dynamic sealing (sliding or rotating service in cylinders, pistons and rotating shafts). Available in NBR 70 (nitrile) and Viton 75 (FKM) compounds across metric, imperial and British Standard (BS 1806) series. O-ring cord is stocked by the metre for custom-size sealing made on-site. For the full O-ring-specific range and selection guidance, see the dedicated O-rings & O-ring kits page.
Selection guidance
- NBR vs Viton — NBR suits most industrial applications (petroleum oils, hydraulic fluid, water, air) at standard temperatures. Viton is required for aggressive chemicals, fuel additives, temperatures above 120 °C, and applications where NBR shows swelling or hardening in service.
- Single vs double lip oil seals — single lip is the standard for sealing lubricant inside a housing. Double lip adds a secondary lip facing outward to exclude dust and contaminants — required in dirty environments such as mining and agricultural equipment.
- Shaft surface matters — oil seals require a clean, smooth, hardened shaft journal. Worn journals are restored with SKF Speedi-Sleeves rather than full shaft replacement.
- Pressure rating — standard radial shaft seals are designed for low-pressure service (typically < 0.5 bar). For higher pressures, specialised pressure-rated seal designs are required.
