Protractors and Angle Gauges

Protractors measure angles — fundamental geometry for layout, fabrication, and inspection work. Where a square handles right angles and a bevel handles a single set angle, a protractor measures any angle from 0° to 360°, with precision matched to the application. AIMS Industrial stocks protractors for trade and engineering use across simple plastic protractors through to digital combination angle gauges.

The protractor types we stock

  • Engineer's bevel protractors — combination of protractor head, blade, and locking mechanism for marking angles in fabrication
  • Digital angle gauges — electronic protractors with LCD readout; absolute angle measurement and relative-angle modes
  • Combination protractor sets — combination square sets that include a protractor head alongside square and centre heads
  • Plastic and aluminium protractors — light-duty marking protractors for layout work
  • Vernier bevel protractors — high-precision angle measurement with vernier scale, for toolroom and inspection work
  • Magnetic angle gauges — for setting angles on saw blades, machine tables, and steel surfaces

Where each type earns its place

  • Engineer's bevel protractors — fabrication and joinery layout work where you need to mark and cut to a measured angle
  • Digital angle gauges — production layout, machine setup, and any application where readability and speed matter
  • Combination sets — workshop layout where you frequently switch between angle, square, and centre measurement
  • Vernier bevel protractors — toolroom work, gauge inspection, and applications where 5-arcminute precision is needed
  • Magnetic gauges — saw blade angle setting, machine table tilt, and any steel-surface angle measurement

Resolution and accuracy

Protractor resolution varies widely — basic plastic protractors read to 1° (sufficient for layout and rough setup), engineer's bevel protractors read to 0.5° or finer (suitable for fabrication and joinery), digital angle gauges read to 0.1° or 0.05° (suitable for most precision work), and vernier bevel protractors read to 5 arcminutes (toolroom and inspection grade). Match the resolution to the application — paying for 5-arcminute precision when 0.5° is sufficient is wasted money.

Mitutoyo covers the precision and toolroom protractor range — Japanese manufacturer with strong heritage in measuring tools. Maxigear is the workshop-grade choice for everyday trade use at sensible pricing. For specific brand or precision requirements, contact our team for sourcing.

Care and accuracy

Precision protractors live and die by how they're stored. Store digital and vernier protractors in their cases; combination square sets should have their components rocked back into their slots after use; steel protractors need light oiling to prevent rust. Don't drop them — even a moderate impact can shift the zero point on a precision instrument. For workshops with traceable inspection requirements, calibration on protractors should follow the same schedule as other measuring tools.

Reading a vernier bevel protractor

The main scale reads degrees; the vernier scale reads minutes (5-arcminute increments are common). The vernier zero on the main scale gives the degrees and the vernier coincidence shows the minutes. Practice with known angles before relying on the readings for precision work — vernier scales take a moment to read accurately.
