Screwdriver Bit Selection — Quick Reference

Screwdriver bits are consumable cutting end of modern fastening system — fit impact drivers + cordless drills + ratcheting screwdrivers + bit holders. Drive virtually any fastener type. Right bit = fastener seated cleanly; wrong bit = stripped fastener + damaged tool.

Bit Drive Type Best For
Phillips (#0 / #1 / #2 / #3) Most common — cabinet + general fastening
Pozidriv (PZ0 / PZ1 / PZ2 / PZ3) European-spec + electrical — see PZ bits
Torx (T6-T80) Modern engineering + automotive + see Torx bits
Slot / Flat Head Older + UK + some industrial fasteners
Hex / Allen (Internal Hex) SHCS + button head + see hex bits
Square Drive (Robertson) R1-R3 Decking + outdoor + see Robertson bits
Tri-Wing / Security Tamper-resistant fasteners + security applications
Standard 1/4" Hex Shank Quick-change driver + cordless compatible
Impact-Rated (Black Finish) Impact driver use — heat-treated shock-resistant
Long-Reach Bit (75mm+) Recessed + deep-hole access
Multi-Pack (Mixed Drive Types) Workshop variety + service van assortment

Critical: Match bit size EXACTLY to fastener — wrong size = stripped fastener + damaged bit. Impact-rated MANDATORY for impact drivers (standard bits SHATTER). Replace dulled/rounded bits promptly. Companion: hex power bits, Torx bits, socket bit sets, cordless power tools.

Screwdriver Bits for Australian Trade and Production Use

Screwdriver bits are the consumable cutting end of any modern fastening system — fitting impact drivers, cordless drills, ratcheting screwdrivers, and bit holders to drive virtually any fastener type and head profile. For Australian tradies, factory assembly, and serious DIY users, the right bit means the difference between fasteners driven cleanly first time and damaged screw heads that cost time and money. AIMS Industrial supplies screwdriver bits across the standard profiles, sizes, lengths, and impact ratings.

The bit profiles we stock

  • Phillips (PH1, PH2, PH3, PH4) — the everyday cross-head bit for most general fasteners
  • Pozidriv (PZ1, PZ2, PZ3, PZ4) — European-spec cross-head with locator ribs for reduced cam-out
  • Slotted — multiple width and thickness combinations for traditional fasteners
  • Torx (T8 to T55) — six-point star drive for automotive, electronics, and high-torque work
  • Torx security (TR) — Torx with central pin for tamper-resistant fasteners
  • Hex (Allen) — metric and imperial — for socket head fasteners
  • Square (Robertson) — common in decking, construction, and Canadian-spec equipment
  • Security profiles — tamper-resistant Phillips, security hex, spanner-drive, and other tamper-proof fasteners

Standard versus impact-rated bits — the critical decision

Impact drivers deliver torque pulses that can shatter standard hex bits. Impact-rated bits have a torsion zone in the shank that twists slightly under load to absorb the shock — they survive in impact drivers where standard bits snap. If you're using an impact driver (most tradespeople are), spec impact-rated bits and you'll spend less on replacements. Standard bits suit hand screwdrivers and low-torque drill drivers; in an impact driver they have a short, expensive life.

Bit length

  • 25mm (insert bit) — short bit for impact drivers and ratcheting screwdrivers
  • 50mm (power bit) — slightly longer for deeper access
  • 75-150mm (long-reach) — for panel-mounted fasteners and deep-recess work
  • 200mm and longer (extra-long-reach) — for specialist applications

Bit holders and accessories

  • Magnetic bit holders — keep bits in the chuck and hold magnetic fasteners on the tip
  • Quick-change bit holders — fast bit changes without removing the holder from the tool
  • Long-reach extensions — for accessing deep fasteners
  • Right-angle bit drivers — for fasteners in tight access where straight drive can't fit

Why bits wear out

Bit life is limited by tip wear — the precision-ground profile rounds off with use, particularly on harder fasteners and at higher torque. Worn bits cam out under load, damage screw heads, and slip during driving. Replace before the bit is fully worn — usually every 100-300 fasteners on production work, less for occasional use. Cheap unbranded bits wear faster and break more — false economy when bit replacement frequency is high.

Brands stocked at AIMS

Wiha and Bahco are our preferred brands for screwdriver bits — chosen because the tip geometry holds true after extended use, the impact-rated versions actually deliver on the promise, and the bit life justifies the price difference over budget alternatives.

Companion ranges at AIMS

Screwdriver bits sit alongside our broader power tool and screwdriver range — see Phillips power bits, Pozidriv power bits, screwdriver bit sets, and screwdrivers for the broader range.
