Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a Phillips and a Pozidriv screwdriver?
Both are cross-head profiles, but Pozidriv (PZ) has extra centring ribs between the main blades that give better grip and cam-out resistance on true PZ fasteners. A Phillips driver will partially seat in a Pozidriv screw and vice versa, but forcing it tends to round out the head — best to match the driver to the fastener where you can tell the difference.
Do I need a VDE-insulated screwdriver for electrical work?
If you're working on or near live conductors, yes — use a screwdriver clearly marked VDE. What is a tamper-resistant Torx screwdriver used for?
Tamper-resistant (security) Torx fasteners have a small pin in the centre of the recess, which blocks a standard Torx driver. A tamper-resistant Torx screwdriver has a matching bore drilled into the tip so it can still seat and drive the fastener. Bondhus supplies these individually and in TR7–TR40 sets, and Ko-Ken offers a tamper-proof Torx set — useful on public-facing equipment and safety guards.
Can ball-end hex screwdrivers be used at an angle?
Yes — that's the main advantage of a ball-end tip over a straight hex driver. The rounded ball lets you engage the fastener from an angle off the driver's axis, which is useful where a straight approach is blocked by an adjacent part. You do lose some torque compared with a straight hex tip fully seated in the socket, so switch to the straight end for final tightening where you can.
What's a nut driver, and when would I use one instead of a socket and ratchet?
A nut driver is a hex socket fixed to a screwdriver-style handle — you turn it by hand or with the palm rather than with a ratchet. They're handy in electronics, panel work and general assembly where a ratchet and socket set is more bulk than the job needs, or where you're working in a tight enclosure. Ko-Ken's Spintite-style drivers and Wiha's hex nut drivers cover this in both metric and imperial sizes.
What is Torx Plus, and is it different from standard Torx?
Torx Plus is a refined version of the six-point Torx star profile, designed to reduce cam-out and improve torque transfer compared with standard Torx. A standard Torx driver can seat in a Torx Plus fastener but won't transmit torque as cleanly; Wiha supplies dedicated Torx Plus blades and drivers for their System 4/6 platform and PicoFinish range where the fastener calls for it.
