Choosing a chain or strap wrench
Choose the wrench by the diameter of the item you need to grip and by how much you can afford to mark it. A chain wrench grips hard and can mark the workpiece, so it suits pipe and round stock where appearance does not matter. A strap wrench is the gentler option where you want to avoid marking a finished surface. Check the capacity listed for each wrench covers your largest diameter.
