Choosing a circlip

Decide first whether the ring goes on a shaft (external) or in a bore (internal). Then match the shaft or bore diameter and check the groove the ring will sit in. Metric and imperial rings are not interchangeable, so measure before you buy. Choose stainless steel where the part will be wet or washed down. A kit is the easiest way to cover a range of sizes for maintenance, and a pack of 5 suits regular replacement. You also need circlip pliers made for the ring type and size, and a damaged or distorted ring should be replaced, not reused. Our Circlip Pliers Guide explains the plier types.

Always check the data sheet. Confirm the ring size, groove, material and any standard you need before ordering.

Circlip FAQs

What is a circlip?

A circlip is a sprung metal ring that seats in a groove on a shaft or inside a bore, holding a bearing, gear or other part in place. It is also called a retaining ring or snap ring.

What is the difference between internal and external circlips?

An external circlip fits on a shaft and seats in a groove on the outside. An internal circlip fits inside a bore and seats in a groove on the inside. They are not interchangeable and need the matching pliers.

How do I choose the right circlip size?

Measure the shaft or bore diameter the ring is for and check the groove it seats in. If you are replacing a worn ring, measure the groove or the shaft, not the distorted ring. Metric and imperial rings are not interchangeable.

Do you have stainless steel circlips?

Yes. We list Finer Power Transmissions stainless steel circlips, Champion stainless circlips and 316/A4 circlips, and Champion stainless kits.

What is the difference between a circlip, snap ring and retaining ring?

They are largely different names for the same type of ring. Circlip is the common Australian and UK term, snap ring is the US term and retaining ring is the general engineering term.

Can I buy a circlip kit?

Yes. We list Champion, GJ Works and Work Shop Buddy kits in metric and imperial, plus refills for the Champion assortments.

Do you list circlip pliers?

We list a Stahlwille circlip pliers set and a Trax circlip set in this collection, and more in our retaining ring pliers range.
