Choosing a cotter pin

Match the pin diameter to the hole and the length to the fastener. Metric and imperial pins are listed separately, so choose the one that matches your hole. Use zinc plated for general use and stainless steel where corrosion matters. An R-clip is quicker to fit and remove than a split pin, and suits pins that are removed often.

For a one-off repair, an assortment kit saves hunting for the right size. Always check the data sheet. Confirm the size and material before you order, and replace split pins rather than reusing them where safety matters.

Cotter pin FAQs

What is the difference between a cotter pin and a split pin?

They are the same thing. Both names are used for a folded wire pin that passes through a hole and has its legs bent over to lock it.

Are split pins metric or imperial?

Both. We list Champion split pins in metric and imperial, and Hobson pins in metric. Check the size in the product title.

Do you list stainless steel split pins?

Yes. We list Inox World split pins in 304 and A4 (316) stainless steel, and a Champion stainless metric kit.

What is an R-clip used for?

An R-clip passes through a hole in a pin and locks it in place. It is quicker to fit and remove than a split pin, so it suits pins that come out often.

Do you list assortment kits?

Yes. We list Champion and GJ Works split pin kits and refills, R-clip kits and Workshop Buddy grab kits.
