Durasquirt and Squirter are direct tension indicator (DTI) washers. They are used in bolted joints to help check that a bolt has been tightened to the tension it is meant to reach. Choosing a DTI washer
Match the washer to the bolt first. The class or grade of the washer should be the same as the bolt it is used with (Class 8.8, Class 10.9 or Grade 5), and the size should match the bolt diameter. Then choose the finish: mechanical galvanised for galvanised bolts, plain / black for plain or black bolts. The Grade 5 washers are listed in fractional sizes, so they suit imperial bolts, while the Class 8.8 and Class 10.9 washers are listed in metric sizes from M12 to M36.
For structural connections, the bolting procedure and how the washers are checked come from the connection design and the manufacturer's fitting instructions. Always check the data sheet. Follow the fitting instructions and your engineer's specification, including whether a washer can be reused once it has been fitted.
