Choosing a flange
Start with the pipe size and the flange designation of whatever you are connecting to, because flanges only mate with the same table, class or PN and bolt pattern. Then choose the type: blind flanges close off a line, slip-on flanges slide over the pipe and are welded, weld neck flanges are butt welded to the pipe, socket weld flanges suit small bore pipe, and screwed flanges thread on without welding. Choose the material and finish for the medium and environment, with 316/316L stainless steel for corrosive duty and galvanised where the flange will be exposed. Allow for gaskets, bolts, nuts and washers.
