Choosing a hex nut

Match the thread first: metric, UNC, UNF or BSW, and coarse or fine pitch. Then match the strength class or grade to the bolt or screw you are using, and choose the finish for the environment: plain for dry indoor use, zinc plated for general use, hot-dip galvanised or stainless steel where corrosion is a concern, brass or nylon for specific applications. Heavy hex nuts are thicker than standard nuts, and thin nuts are for tight spaces or locking. For nuts with a locking feature see hex lock nuts. Always check the data sheet for the size, class or grade, finish and thread pitch before ordering.

Hex Nut FAQs

Do you stock both metric and imperial hex nuts?

Yes. The range covers metric coarse and fine thread, and imperial UNC, UNF and BSW, plus Acme hex nuts and Champion manifold nuts in BSF.

What is a heavy hex nut?

A heavy hex nut is a thicker, larger-across-flats nut than a standard hex nut, used on heavier fasteners. The imperial range includes heavy hex nuts in UNC and UNF in several grades. Check the grade and size on the product page.

Which hex nut should I use with a stainless steel bolt?

Use a stainless steel nut of the same grade family as the bolt, such as 304 (A2) or 316 (A4), to keep corrosion resistance consistent. Inox World, Bumax and Champion stainless nuts are in the range.
