Choosing a hex set screw

Work out the thread first (metric, UNC, UNF or BSW), then diameter and length, then the strength class or grade and the finish. Zinc plated is the general-purpose choice. Hot-dip galvanised and stainless steel are the options where corrosion is a concern, and nylon screws suit light-duty or non-metallic applications. Sems screws save fitting a separate washer. Match the nut or tapped hole to the same thread. Always check the data sheet for the class or grade, finish and dimensions before ordering.

Hex Set Screw FAQs

What is the difference between a set screw and a bolt?

A set screw is threaded along the full length of the shank up to the head, while a bolt usually has a plain section below the head. Set screws are commonly run into tapped holes or used with a nut where a full-length thread is needed.

Do you stock imperial hex set screws?

Yes. The range includes UNC and UNF screws in Grade 5 and Grade 8, a BSW screw, and Champion imperial assortment kits and refills. Metric screws are listed in coarse and fine pitch.

Which finish should I choose?

Zinc plated suits general use. Where corrosion is a concern, choose hot-dip galvanised or stainless steel. Nylon screws are in the range for light-duty and non-metallic applications.
