A self-centering drill bit drills a pilot hole exactly in the middle of the hole in a hinge, strike plate or other fitting. Choosing a self-centering drill bit

A self-centering bit has a spring-loaded sleeve that locates in the hole of the fitting. As you press, the sleeve retracts and the bit drills a pilot hole in the surface behind, so the screw lands in the centre of the hole. That avoids doors that bind, locks that sit badly and stripped screws.

Choose the bit by the size of the pilot hole your screw needs, and check that the sleeve suits the holes in your hinges and fittings. The 1/4 inch shank fits an impact driver or a drill chuck. Run at a moderate speed and let the sleeve seat in the hole before the bit cuts. A self-centering bit is for piloting through fittings, so use ordinary drill bits for other drilling. For drilling metal substrates, check the product details first.

Always check the data sheet. Confirm the bit size and the fitting hole size before you order.

Self-centering drill bit FAQs

What is a self-centering drill bit?

It is a drill bit with a spring-loaded sleeve that centres in the hole of a hinge or fitting, then retracts as the bit drills a pilot hole in the surface behind. It is also called a vix bit.

What self-centering bits does AIMS list?

Two P&N Quickbit products: single bits in 5/64, 3/32, 7/64, 1/8 and 9/64, and a 4 piece set. They are HSS with a 1/4 inch shank.

What size bit do I need?

Choose the pilot size that suits your screw, and check that the sleeve suits the hole in the hinge or fitting. Call us on (02) 9773 0122 if you are not sure which size to pick.

Can I use one in an impact driver?

Yes. The 1/4 inch shank fits an impact driver or a drill chuck. Run at a moderate speed and let the sleeve seat in the hole before the bit cuts.

Can I use it for general drilling?

No. The spring and sleeve are made for piloting through fittings, and side loads from freehand drilling can damage them. Use ordinary drill bits for other work.
