Choosing shim stock
Start with the thickness you need to fill, and buy a little finer than you think so you can build up the gap in layers. Roll or sheet suits cutting your own shims to shape, while slotted shims slide around a bolt and let you adjust machinery height without removing the fasteners. Choose the material for the job: steel for general machinery and alignment, brass where a softer, easy-to-cut shim is wanted, and stainless steel where corrosion or washdown is a concern. Measure the gap with a micrometer or feeler gauges before choosing a thickness.

What is a slotted shim used for?
A slotted shim has a slot that slides around a bolt, so you can fit or change a shim under machinery without removing the fastener. We list stainless steel slotted shims in metric and imperial sizes.
Which material should I choose, steel, brass or stainless?
Steel suits general machinery and alignment. Brass is softer and easy to cut to shape. Stainless steel suits corrosive or washdown conditions. Check the data sheet for your application.
