Choosing a tap and die set
Start with the thread form you work on most, because a set only covers the threads it lists. Metric and UNC/UNF cover most modern work, BSW, BSF and BA suit older machinery and instruments, and pipe thread sets suit plumbing and fittings. Then choose the material. HSS suits regular use across a wider range of materials, while carbon steel sets are an economical choice for occasional use on softer metals. Larger sets such as the 110 piece kits cover more threads in one case, but a single-form set is often better value if you only work in one thread. Check the case lists the size you need, and keep a tap wrench and die holder on hand if the set does not include them.
