Choosing a thread gauge

Plug gauges check internal threads, such as tapped holes, and ring gauges check external threads, such as bolts and studs. In Go/No-Go checking, the Go gauge should screw in or on, and the No-Go gauge should not. Start by identifying the thread form (metric coarse or fine, UNC, UNF, BSW, BSF, BSPT, BSPF, NPT, BA or BSB) and the size, then check the gauge tolerance on the product page against your drawing. If you are not sure what thread you have, a pitch gauge or workshop thread gauge will identify it first. Our Thread Gauge & Pitch Gauge Guide covers selection in more detail. Always check the data sheet.

Thread Measuring Gauges FAQs

What is the difference between a thread plug gauge and a ring gauge?

A plug gauge checks an internal thread, such as a tapped hole. A ring gauge checks an external thread, such as a bolt or stud. We list both for BA, BSB, BSF, BSPF, BSPT, BSW, metric coarse, metric fine, NPT, UNC and UNF threads.

Why are some ring gauges listed as Go and No-Go separately?

Goliath lists its metric coarse and metric fine ring gauges as separate Go and No-Go gauges, so you order both for a full check. The metric plug gauges are listed as Go/No-Go. Check each product page to see what is included.

How do I identify an unknown thread?

Use a pitch gauge or workshop thread gauge to find the pitch first. We list a Goliath pitch gauge, a Mitutoyo pitch gauge set and P&N workshop gauges for metric/Whitworth, UNC and UNF threads, and there are more in Screw Pitch Gauges.
