Choosing a water pump
Start with the job. Drainage and sump work suits a submersible drainage pump with a float, supply and pressure work suits a pressure pump with a controller, and site work without mains power suits an engine-driven pump. Then check three numbers on the listing: flow rate in L/min, the head (lift and pressure) the pump can deliver, and the power supply. Match the duty point to your job, because an undersized pump will not deliver and an oversized pump wastes energy. Check what the water carries, because solids and debris need a pump rated for them.

How do I size a water pump?
Work out the flow you need in L/min and the head, meaning the lift plus the pressure at the outlet. Choose a pump whose listed flow and head cover that duty point, and check the power supply.
Submersible or surface pump?
A submersible pump sits in the water, which suits sumps, drains and ponds. A surface pump sits above the water and is easier to get to for service. Check the listing for which type each pump is.
Do you have an engine-driven pump for site work?
