Selecting the right option

Tap style is matched to the application: a taper tap starts the thread easily; an intermediate (plug) tap continues it; a bottoming tap threads to the bottom of blind holes. HSS suits general steel and aluminium; HSS-Co is required for stainless and hard alloys. The pitch must match the thread specification — metric coarse is the default; metric fine is used where vibration resistance or greater thread engagement per unit length is needed.
