Selecting the right option
If you need a non-flammable cleaner, the NF Contact Cleaner 400g has no flash point, but CRC warns it may be harmful to some plastics, for example ABS, PEBAX2533 and polystyrene. The CO and QD versions are described by CRC as plastic safe but are extremely flammable aerosols.
For cleaning electric motors and larger equipment see CRC Aerosol Lectra Clean Electric Motor & Equipment Cleaner 400g.
Using it
Do not use on energised equipment. Shut off the power and isolate the equipment before spraying, and let the surface dry completely and the area ventilate before power is restored.
CRC's directions differ slightly by version, so read the directions for the pack you have. Details are listed against each pack.
Limits and safety
SDS classifications differ by version. CO Contact Cleaner (150g, 350g; SDS revision 4.1): Danger. Extremely flammable aerosol (H222), pressurised container that may burst if heated (H229), may cause drowsiness or dizziness (H336); UN 1950, Class 2.1. QD Contact Cleaner (311g; SDS revision 1.5): Danger. Extremely flammable aerosol (H222), pressurised container (H229), may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways (H304), causes skin irritation (H315), may cause drowsiness or dizziness (H336), very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects (H410); UN 1950, Class 2.1; classified as Schedule 5 (S5) under the SUSMP poisons standard. NF Contact Cleaner (400g; SDS revision 1.4): Warning. Pressurised container (H229), harmful if inhaled (H332), harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects (H412); UN 1950, Class 2.2. Do not use on energised equipment. Test on a small area before use. Read the safety data sheet before use.
Frequently asked questions
Is CRC CO Contact Cleaner flammable?
Yes. CRC lists it as extremely flammable with a flash point below 0 °C, and the SDS (revision 4.1) classifies it Danger, Aerosols Flammable Category 1 (H222), UN 1950, Class 2.1. This applies to the 150g and 350g packs.
Is the 400g CRC NF Contact Cleaner flammable?
No. CRC lists it as non-flammable with no flash point, and the SDS (revision 1.4) classes it as a pressurised aerosol, Category 3 (H229), UN 1950, Class 2.2. CRC warns it may be harmful to some plastics, for example ABS, PEBAX2533 and polystyrene.
Which CRC contact cleaner is plastic safe?
CRC describes the CO (150g, 350g) and QD (311g) versions as plastic safe. For the NF 400g, CRC says to test on a small area first because it may be harmful to some plastics.
Can I use CRC contact cleaner on energised equipment?
No. CRC's directions for the CO version say to de-activate and isolate equipment before use, the QD version says not to apply it while equipment is energised, and the NF version is not recommended for energised equipment.
Does CRC CO Contact Cleaner carry an NSF registration?
CRC states NSF registration no. 134911, category K2. The NSF letter dated 29/06/04 says it is acceptable for use as a solvent for cleaning electronic instruments and devices (K2) and not intended for direct food contact.
What is the dielectric strength of CRC CO Contact Cleaner?
CRC gives 40,000 volt, tested to ASTM D-877, for the CO version (150g and 350g).
