IKO POS-3 Rod End Bearing, Male Thread M3 x 0.5, Right Hand, 3 mm Bore

This page covers the IKO POS rod end bearings (often called heim joints) with a male thread and a right-hand thread, in metric sizes for bores of 3 to 25 mm: POS-3 to POS-25. POS is the lubrication type, insert type PILLOBALL rod end: a spherical inner ring, chromium plated after heat treatment and grinding, runs in an inserted bushing of special copper alloy with superior run-in properties, inside a body with a zinc chromate treated outer surface. It has superior anti-wear and anti-corrosion properties and high rigidity, and it takes a large radial load and a bi-directional axial load at the same time.

POS has a male thread on the body (metric thread G). A right-hand thread has no code in the part number, so none of the part numbers on this page carry an L.

Selecting the right option

The drop-down is the bore diameter d of the inner ring in mm, and the number in the part number is the bore size in mm (POS-3 has a 3 mm bore). The thread is set by the size, so check the thread G in the Model Details against your rod or hole.

A male thread screws into a tapped hole or nut of the same thread. Check the thread length l1 in the Model Details against the depth of your hole.

Neither an oil hole nor a grease nipple is provided on the POS with a bore of 4 mm or less. The 5 and 6 mm bores have an oil hole on the body, and larger bores have a grease nipple on the body.

Fitting and use

Lubrication type PILLOBALL rod ends are not supplied with prepacked grease. Lubricate them before use: operating without lubrication increases the wear of the sliding surfaces and can cause seizure.

The recommended bushing load is up to 0.3 x Cd for a constant load and up to 0.6 x Cd for an alternate load, and the static load capacity Cs must also be considered (0.3 x Cs for a constant load and 0.2 x Cs for an alternate load). Where an axial load is added to a radial load, the body is also stressed in bending.

The equivalent radial load is P = Fr + Y x Fa, where Y is 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 for an Fa/Fr of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5; an Fa/Fr above 0.5 is marked unusable.

The allowable tilting angle depends on the mounting structure: the Model Details give α1 and α2 for each size. The maximum allowable temperature of the insert type is +180 °C, and the dynamic load capacity is multiplied by a temperature factor ft (1 up to +150 °C, 0.7 from +150 to +180 °C).

Cd is the dynamic load capacity, based on the contact pressure on the sliding surface and used to calculate life, and Cs is the static load capacity.
