Made from 304 (A2) stainless steel, a standard austenitic grade with good everyday corrosion resistance. It is a sound choice away from the coast; in chloride-exposed settings, step up to 316 (A4). Gauge sizes are shown as a number followed by G. On this range 6G is 3.5 mm, 8G is 4.2 mm, 10G is 4.8 mm, 12G is 5.5 mm and 14G is 6.3 mm, as listed by the supplier.
Austenitic stainless steel is generally non-magnetic, although cold-worked parts can show weak magnetism. In wet conditions, keep stainless steel apart from aluminium and galvanised steel with a washer or sleeve, to reduce the risk of galvanic corrosion.
