Sutton M2271270 1/2-12 BSW Hand Tap Set - Taper, Intermediate and Bottoming

The Sutton M227 BSW hand tap set is a set of three straight flute hand taps in one thread size: one taper tap, one intermediate tap and one bottoming tap. It is made in 8 sizes from 1/8-40 to 1/2-12, so you buy the set that matches the thread you need to cut.

The taps are made from tungsten chrome alloy (TCA) with a square shank for use in a tap wrench. The straight flutes suit materials where chips break up readily, particularly through-hole tapping, and the taps are for hand use only, to a depth of up to 1.5 x diameter.

These are carbon taps for general purpose and DIY use. They are not suitable for precision, safety or critical threads. Taper taps are used when the material is difficult to work (alloy steel) and are recommended for small diameter threads. Intermediate taps help align and start the tap into an untapped hole. Bottoming taps have a continuous cutting edge with almost no taper and are usually used to cut threads to the bottom of a blind hole.
