The Sutton T520 is a forming (roll) tap with multi coolant groove for metric coarse (M) threads, made from premium grade high speed steel (HSSE) with a gold titanium nitride (TiN) coating. This listing covers 4 sizes from M3 x 0.5 to M10 x 1.5.
A forming tap has no flutes and does not cut: it rolls the thread by displacing the metal, so it makes no chips and suits blind and through holes. Forming needs more machine power because of the torque involved, the rolled thread is stronger than a cut thread because the grain structure stays uniform through the thread form, and the tapping drill size differs from that of a cutting tap.
The tap is built to JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards).

- For cold forming of threads in materials with good flow characteristics.
- Suitable for material with >10% elongation.
- P lead for through holes.
- Depths up to approx. 3 x d1.
Design features
- Premium grade high speed steel (HSSE). The vanadium grade gives high wear resistance and toughness for most tapping applications.
- Gold titanium nitride (TiN) coating for 3 to 8 times longer tool life than uncoated tools, with higher speeds and feeds.
