Available
The Sutton D518 is a Scotch pattern landscape auger bit in carbon steel with a Power Groove hex shank, designed for boring in hard and soft wood in rough, heavily grained or knotted timber. This listing covers 7 sizes: 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, 20 and 28 mm (the full D518 range is 15 sizes from 12 to 38 mm, with the other sizes in a separate listing).
The Scotch pattern provides more stability and accuracy than standard auger bits, and is designed for landscape use. The robust Scotch pattern flute is designed to withstand the hardest wood drilling applications, and the bit is also effective for boring in the end grain of soft wood and the end or cross grain of hard wood. The carbon steel is heat treated and tempered over its full length for extra durability and long life.

Using the auger bit
- Match the shank (1/4 in hex or 7/16 in hex, see the size table) to the chuck or driver you are using.
- Start at a low speed so the screw point can engage and draw the bit into the timber, then keep a steady pressure and let the bit feed itself.
- In deep holes, withdraw the bit from time to time to clear the chips from the flutes.
- Back the timber with a scrap piece, or ease off as the bit breaks through, to reduce break-out on the exit side.
