Loctite 290 Medium to High Strength Threadlocker 10ml

Loctite 290 is a one-component, green, medium to high strength anaerobic threadlocker (dimethacrylate ester) with a low viscosity. Henkel describes it for threadlocking and sealing pre-assembled threaded fasteners.

Capillary action draws it between engaged threads, so the fastener does not need to be taken apart. It can also fill porosity in welds, castings and powdered metal parts.

Selecting the right option

Use Loctite 290 when the fastener is already assembled. If you can apply the product before assembly, compare Loctite 243 Medium Strength Threadlocker (medium strength) and Loctite 263 High Strength Threadlocker (high strength).

Using it

For through holes, apply several drops at the screw and body juncture. Avoid touching the bottle tip to the metal surface.

An activator (Loctite SF 7471 or SF 7649) can be used as a secondary cure.

Cure speed depends on the materials, the gap and the temperature; the cure-speed graphs are in the Henkel data sheet. The data sheet gives no fixture time and no maximum gap; cure was tested at 0.05 and 0.15 mm gaps.

Henkel states no operating temperature range. Hot strength is graphed from 0 to 150 °C, and heat ageing at 100, 120 and 150 °C.

Storage and handling

Store unopened in a dry location. Henkel gives 8 °C to 21 °C as the optimal range. Storage below 8 °C or above 28 °C can adversely affect the properties of the product.

Limits and safety

Not recommended for pure oxygen or oxygen-rich systems, or as a sealant for chlorine or other strong oxidisers. Not normally recommended for plastics, as stress cracking can occur. Check compatibility after aqueous washes.
