M4 x 8 mm Hex Set Bolt, 316 Stainless Steel - XHSA4M4X8

The Metric Hex Set Bolt (Full Thread), 316 Stainless Steel is a hex head bolt threaded along its full length (also sold as a hex set screw). The full thread lets it run right up to the head and suits tapped holes and thin joints.

The range runs to 229 variants, covering sizes M4 to M36 and lengths 8 mm to 220 mm. Variants are supplied in packs of 5 to 100, depending on size.

Supplied in 316 (A4) stainless steel. The molybdenum in A4 gives better resistance to chlorides than A2 (304), so it is the usual choice near the coast, around pools and in marine and food-processing environments. Metric sizes are written M followed by the nominal thread diameter in millimetres, so M10 is a 10 mm thread.

Austenitic stainless steel is generally non-magnetic, although cold-worked parts can show weak magnetism. In wet conditions, keep stainless steel apart from aluminium and galvanised steel with a washer or sleeve, to reduce the risk of galvanic corrosion.

Key specifications

Selecting the right option

A fully threaded bolt is the usual choice for tapped holes. Where the joint is loaded sideways, a partly threaded hex bolt keeps a plain shank in the shear plane. Use anti-seize on the thread, because stainless threads can gall when tightened. For indoor and general outdoor use where chlorides are not a concern, the A2 (304) version is the lower-cost option: Metric Hex Set Bolt (Full Thread) - 304 Stainless Steel.
