A globe valve is used to start, stop and regulate flow in a line. AIMS Industrial lists AAP globe valves in bronze, stainless steel, forged steel and cast steel, in screwed, socketweld and flanged connections, plus a Dixon bronze globe valve. Ratings in the titles include Class 800 for forged steel and ANSI 150 and 300 for flanged cast steel.

Dixon globe valve Dixon VGB3-8 8mm 3-way globe valve in bronze.

Choosing a globe valve

Start with the connection and size: screwed, NPT, socketweld or flanged, and the pipe size. Then match the body material to the service. Bronze suits general water and air lines, stainless steel suits where corrosion resistance matters, and forged or cast steel suit higher pressure lines. Check the class or rating in the title against your system pressure, and match flange class (ANSI 150 or 300) to the mating flange.

A globe valve restricts flow more than a gate or ball valve, so it suits throttling and regulating rather than full bore flow. See ball valves and gate valves if full bore flow matters. Always check the data sheet. Confirm the pressure, temperature and fluid rating before you order.

Globe valve FAQs

What is a globe valve used for?

A globe valve is used to start, stop and regulate flow. It suits throttling better than a gate valve because the disc can be set part way open.

What materials do you list?

Bronze with stainless steel trim, stainless steel, forged steel and cast steel from AAP, plus a Dixon bronze valve.

What connections do you list?

Screwed (including NPT), socketweld and flanged connections. Flanged cast steel valves are listed in ANSI 150 and ANSI 300.

What does Class 800 mean?

Class 800 is a pressure class for forged steel valves, listed in the titles of the AAP forged steel globe valves. Check the data sheet for the pressure and temperature ratings.

Globe valve or ball valve?

Use a globe valve where you need to regulate flow and a ball valve where you need quick on and off with full bore flow.
