Choosing a hex bolt
Start with the thread. Metric coarse is the usual choice for new work, metric fine suits applications that call for it, UNC and UNF are for imperial equipment, and BSW is for older British-pattern machinery. If you are matching an existing bolt, check the thread with a gauge rather than going by the head size alone.
Then choose the strength and the finish. Metric Class 4.6 is for light duty, Class 8.8 is the common general purpose class, and Class 10.9 is used where more strength is needed. UNC and UNF Grade 5 and Grade 8 follow the same idea in imperial. For finish, plain steel suits indoor and oiled applications, zinc plating adds light corrosion protection, and hot-dip galvanised suits outdoor use. Stainless suits wet or corrosive conditions, with 316 the usual step up from 304 near salt water and chemicals. Bumax is a high tensile stainless bolt for jobs where plain stainless is not strong enough. Nylon bolts are for light, non-metallic jobs.
Match the nut and washer to the bolt, and avoid mixing stainless and carbon steel fasteners in a wet joint. Use our bolt grade chart to read the markings and the metric bolt torque chart for tightening.
Always check the data sheet. Confirm the property class, thread, finish and pack size on the listing before you order for a structural or safety critical joint.

What hex bolts does AIMS list?
We list 56 hex bolts: metric coarse and fine thread, UNC, UNF, UNS and BSW, in carbon steel, 304 and 316 stainless, Bumax stainless and nylon, plus Champion assortment kits and refills.
What is the difference between UNC and UNF hex bolts?
UNC is the coarse imperial thread and UNF is the fine imperial thread. They are not interchangeable, so check the thread of the bolt you are replacing with a thread gauge.
Which metric class should I choose?
Class 4.6 is light duty, Class 8.8 is the common general purpose class and Class 10.9 is used where more strength is needed. Match the nut to the bolt, and check the data sheet for structural or safety critical joints.
Should I use zinc plated, galvanised or stainless?
Zinc plating adds light corrosion protection for indoor and mild conditions. Hot-dip galvanised suits outdoor use. Stainless suits wet or corrosive conditions, and 316 is the usual choice near salt water or chemicals. Check the listing for the finish and material.
What is Bumax?
Bumax hex bolts are stainless steel bolts sold in 8.8 and 10.9 strength levels, for jobs where standard stainless is not strong enough. Check the data sheet for the full specification.
Where are fully threaded hex bolts and flanged bolts?
Fully threaded bolts are in hex set bolts, flanged bolts are in hex head flanged bolts and purlin bolts are in purlin bolts and nuts.
