AIMS Industrial lists six pot magnets: five MSA Magnetics rare earth pot magnets in different mounting styles and a Maxigear round pot magnet. Pot magnets hold work, fixtures and fittings to steel without drilling or clamping, and the steel pot concentrates the magnetic force on the working face. For lifting magnets, magnetic holders, sweepers and chucks, see the related ranges below.

What's in the range

Type Products What the range includes
MSA Magnetics rare earth pot magnets 5 A Series countersunk centre hole, B Series straight hole, C Series male thread, D Series female threaded boss and E Series complete with hook. Each series is offered in sizes from 10 to 88, depending on the series.
Maxigear round pot magnet 1 Sizes 16, 19, 25 and 30.

Choosing a pot magnet

Start with how you want to attach the magnet. A countersunk or straight hole takes a screw or bolt through the centre, a male thread or a female threaded boss lets you fit a stud, handle or fixture, and the hook version hangs a load or a cable from a steel surface. Then choose the size for the holding force you need. Larger pot magnets hold more, so check the size you pick against the weight and the surface you are holding.

Holding force falls as the steel gets thinner, rougher, painted or curved, and it is rated for a flat, clean steel face in a straight pull. A sideways load will slide a magnet at a much lower figure, so leave a generous margin. Rare earth magnets are strong enough to pinch skin when they snap onto steel, and they should be kept away from pacemakers and electronics. Heat reduces the strength of a magnet, so check the maximum operating temperature before using one near a hot surface.

Always check the data sheet. Confirm the holding force, dimensions and temperature limit for the size you choose, and do not use a pot magnet to lift loads overhead unless it is rated for that.

Pot magnet FAQs

What magnets does AIMS list here?

Six pot magnets: five MSA Magnetics rare earth pot magnets (A to E Series) and a Maxigear round pot magnet. Lifting magnets, Magswitch holders, sweepers and magnetic bit holders have their own ranges.

What is a pot magnet?

A pot magnet is a magnet set in a steel cup. The cup concentrates the magnetic force on one face, so it holds much more than the same magnet used bare. It is used to mount, fix and hold things on steel.

What is the difference between the MSA A, B, C, D and E Series?

It is the way the magnet is attached. The A Series has a countersunk centre hole and the B Series a straight hole. The C Series has a male thread, the D Series a female threaded boss, and the E Series comes complete with a hook.

How do I choose the right size?

Choose by the holding force you need, then add a generous margin. Holding force is rated for a flat, clean steel face and a straight pull, and falls with thin, painted, rough or curved steel and with sideways loads. Check the data sheet for the size you choose.

Are rare earth magnets safe to handle?

They need care. Strong magnets can snap together or onto steel and pinch fingers, and they should be kept away from pacemakers, electronics and magnetic cards. Handle larger sizes one at a time.
