Choosing a rigging screw

Start with the end fittings. A jaw end takes a pin through an eye, an eye end takes a shackle or hook, a toggle end allows some movement, and a swage end is pressed onto the wire rope. Then match the thread size to the wire or rod and the load to the rated capacity. For outdoor, marine or wet conditions, stainless steel resists corrosion better than galvanised.

Check the screw has enough thread engaged at both ends and use locknuts where vibration could back it off.

Always check the data sheet. Confirm the working load limit, thread size and suitability for your application, especially if the rigging screw is part of a lifting assembly.

Rigging screw FAQs

What is a rigging screw?

A rigging screw, also called a turnbuckle, has opposite threads at each end so turning the body tightens or loosens the wire rope or rod connected to it.

What do jaw, eye, toggle and swage ends mean?

A jaw end has a pin through the eye, an eye end connects with a shackle or hook, a toggle end allows movement, and a swage end is pressed onto the wire rope.

Do you have stainless steel rigging screws?

Yes. We list Austlift G316 stainless steel rigging screws and Inox World A4 (316) stainless steel rigging screws.

What are Grade P, S and L?

They are the grades shown in the Austlift product titles, and they have different working load limits. Check the data sheet for the grade and size you choose.

Do you have small rigging screws for light wire?

Yes. Inox World M5 and M6 stainless swage rigging screws for 3.2mm wire are sold in boxes of 10.
