Choosing wire rope
Start with the job. A construction such as 6 x 7 is stiffer and more resistant to abrasion, while 6 x 19 and 7 x 19 are more flexible, and 6 x 36 is more flexible again. Choose a flexible rope where it runs over sheaves or pulleys, and a stiffer rope for static uses. Then choose the material. Galvanised rope suits general outdoor use, PVC coating adds colour and protection, and 316 stainless steel suits marine and corrosive conditions.
The grade (G1570, G1770, G2070) relates to the rope's tensile strength, so higher grades are stronger for the same diameter. Match the diameter, grade and construction to the rated load and the fittings you will use with it.
Always check the data sheet. Confirm the breaking strength, working load limit and suitability for your application. Wire rope used for lifting must be used with rated fittings and inspected before use.

Wire rope FAQs
What do 6 x 19 and 7 x 7 mean?
The first number is the number of strands in the rope, and the second is the number of wires in each strand. More wires per strand makes the rope more flexible, and fewer makes it stiffer and more abrasion resistant.
What does G1570 or G2070 mean?
It is the tensile grade of the wire. A higher number means a higher tensile strength. Check the data sheet for the breaking strength of the size you choose.
What does RHOL mean?
It stands for right hand ordinary lay, which describes how the wires and strands are twisted.
Do you have stainless steel wire rope?
Yes. We list Inox World 316 stainless steel wire rope in 1 x 19, 7 x 7 and 7 x 19 constructions, and a white PVC coated 7 x 7.
Do you have wire rope with a loop already on the end?
Yes. We list Beaver wire rope with a thimble eye on one end, and a 7 x 7 rope with a swaged thimble eye.
Can I use wire rope for lifting?
Only with rope and fittings rated for the load and used within their working load limits. Check the data sheet and call us on (02) 9773 0122 if you need help.
