CRC NF Brakleen Heavy Duty Brake and Parts Cleaner and Degreaser 500g

CRC NF Brakleen is a non-flammable cleaner and degreaser for brake and clutch parts and general mechanical equipment, supplied here as a 500g aerosol and a 20L drum. CRC lists no flash point or fire point.

The SDS lists tetrachloroethylene and dichloromethane, both chlorinated solvents, as the main ingredients, and classifies the product as suspected of causing cancer. The two packs carry different dangerous goods classes, so check the details for the pack you choose.

Selecting the right option

Using it

De-energise equipment before cleaning. Spray liberally and allow the product to run off, and repeat the application if necessary. Air dry or dry with a soft cloth.

Protect rubber brake parts and painted surfaces from overspray, and test on a small area before using.

Storage and handling

Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated area, away from incompatible substances, heat, ignition sources and foodstuffs. Keep containers sealed when not in use and check regularly for leaks.

Limits and safety

SDS classification: Warning for both packs; suspected of causing cancer (H351), causes skin irritation (H315), causes serious eye irritation (H319) and toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects (H411). The 500g aerosol is also a pressurised container (H229), UN 1950, Class 2.2; do not pierce or burn it and keep it below 50 °C. The 20L drum may cause drowsiness or dizziness (H336), and CRC's precautions say it may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways; it is UN 1897, Class 6.1, Packing Group III. The SDS classifies both packs as Schedule 6 (S6) under the SUSMP poisons standard and as marine pollutants, and states that tetrachloroethylene and dichloromethane are classified as probably carcinogenic to humans (IARC Group 2A).
