CRC Etch It Etch Primer for White & Yellow Metals 400ml
Available
CRC Etch It (CRC product number 2110) is a single pack etch primer for etching and key-coating bare aluminium, stainless steel, brass, copper and galvanised metal surfaces. CRC says it forms a tenacious key coat that provides adhesion for a paint system. The resin is an epoxy ester and the pack is a 400ml aerosol.
CRC's data sheet gives touch dry in 20 minutes, full cure in 1 hour, and a time to overcoat of 1 hour minimum to 3 months maximum. The aerosol is classified extremely flammable and may damage fertility or the unborn child (H360); the hazard details are below.

Selecting the right option
CRC lists CRC Prep It Anti-Corrosive High Build Easy Metal Primer 2114 - 400ml and CRC Zinc It among the coatings that can be applied over Etch It. For bare or lightly rusted steel, CRC lists CRC Prime It Anti-Corrosive Primer for Steel 2091 - 400ml, and says to pre-prime aluminium, stainless steel, brass, copper and galvanised metal with Etch It first.
Using it
CRC's surface preparation: remove signs of corrosion with a wire brush or emery paper or similar. Clean the surface with CRC Brakleen or similar degreaser if required. Where possible, abrade the surface with disc grinding, wire brush or sandpaper.
CRC's directions: shake the can until the agitator ball is moving freely, then for at least 1 further minute. Apply one thin coat with smooth even strokes to a clean, dry surface, holding the can approximately 25 cm from the surface.
When finished spraying, clean the valve by turning the can upside down and pressing the button until only pressure escapes. Clean up with acetone or lacquer thinner.
Storage and handling
Do not puncture, incinerate or store above 50°C. Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated area, away from heat or ignition sources (data sheet and safety data sheet).
Limits and safety
Classified as hazardous under Safe Work Australia criteria. Signal word Danger. H222: extremely flammable aerosol. H229: pressurised container, may burst if heated. H315: causes skin irritation. H319: causes serious eye irritation. H336: may cause drowsiness or dizziness. H360: may damage fertility or the unborn child. H373: may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure. UN 1950, AEROSOLS, Class 2.1; flash point below 0°C. Poison schedule 5 (S5). Not classified as an environmental hazard. CRC's data sheet says the solvents are highly flammable (keep away from flames and electrical equipment) and that aerosol cans will conduct electricity. Read the safety data sheet before use.
