CRC Aerosol Zinc It Galvanic Rust Protection 350g
Available
CRC Zinc It is a single component zinc rich compound with a special epoxy binder. CRC states it gives galvanic rust prevention and dries a flat mid grey.
CRC lists it for structural steel, transmission towers, guard rails, welding seams, storage tanks, ships, and coastal and ship borne installations subject to severe salt water and salt spray corrosion. This page covers the 350g aerosol, CRC product number 2085.

Selecting the right option
CRC says conventional enamels should not be used over zinc rich primers unless a barrier coat such as Etch Primer is first applied over the Zinc It coating; see CRC Etch It Etch Primer for White & Yellow Metals 2110 - 400ml. For a zinc rich paint that dries bright silver see CRC Aerosol Bright Zinc Galvanic Rust Protection 350g.
Using it
CRC says thorough surface preparation gives longer protection. Ideally use abrasive blasting to AS 1627.9 Class 2, which substantially removes millscale, rust and foreign particles so that grey metal is visible. Apply to a firm, dry, thoroughly abraded surface.
Shake the aerosol thoroughly to mix before use. Correctly mixed, it is smooth and uniform throughout and dries a flat mid grey.
Overpainting: conventional enamels should not be used over zinc rich primers unless a barrier coat such as Etch Primer is first applied over the Zinc It coating.
For clean-up after spraying CRC gives thinners.
Storage and handling
Do not puncture, incinerate or store above 50 °C. Do not place in direct sunlight or near any heat source. CRC gives a conditional warranty of 5 years from the date of manufacture.
Limits and safety
SDS classification: signal word Danger. Extremely flammable aerosol. Pressurised container: may burst if heated. Causes skin irritation. May cause drowsiness or dizziness. May damage fertility or the unborn child. May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure. Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects. Transport: UN 1950, Aerosols, Class 2.1, no packing group allocated; SDS poison schedule: Schedule 5 (S5). Aerosol cans will conduct electricity: keep away from all live electrical sources including battery terminals, solenoids and electrical panels. Use only in a well ventilated area. Read the safety data sheet before use.
Frequently asked questions
What is CRC Zinc It?
CRC describes it as a single component zinc rich compound with a special epoxy binder, to give galvanic rust prevention. It dries a flat mid grey.
What salt spray result does CRC state for Zinc It?
CRC's data sheet gives ASTM B117 salt spray corrosion of >1000 hours. No other test conditions are printed.
How long does CRC Zinc It take to dry and cure?
At 20 °C CRC gives 20 minutes to touch, 8 hours to recoat and 24 hours to hard. Complete cure is 72 hours.
Can I paint over CRC Zinc It with enamel?
CRC says conventional enamels should not be used over zinc rich primers unless a barrier coat such as Etch Primer is first applied over the Zinc It coating.
What is the flash point of CRC Zinc It?
The safety data sheet gives 12 °C, and the technical data sheet gives 41 °C for the product without propellant. The SDS classes the can as an extremely flammable aerosol.
Is CRC Zinc It a dangerous good?
Yes for transport: the SDS lists UN 1950, Aerosols, Class 2.1, no packing group allocated. It carries the signal word Danger and may damage fertility or the unborn child, so read the SDS before use.
