Dixon FPT-PT-050 50 mm PetroGard Petrolatum Tape, 10 m

This Dixon petrolatum tape is the PetroGard Tape Standard, the wrap layer of the PetroGard system for protecting metal surfaces. Dixon lists it in 4 widths, from 50 mm to 150 mm, in 10 m rolls (manufacturer-stated).

Dixon says the PetroGard system was developed for the protection of metal surfaces in the most severe environments, and that it is designed to go on over wire-brushed surfaces in exposed, underground and underwater applications (manufacturer-stated).

• Protecting metal pipe, fittings and other metal surfaces that are exposed, buried or underwater (manufacturer-stated).
• Wrapping straight pipe runs, with PetroGard mastic used to shape up valves, flanges and other complex surfaces (manufacturer-stated).

Dixon says surfaces should be cleaned of dirt, oil, scale and excess moisture, and loose rust, paint and residue removed by hand or power tool in accordance with AS1627 (Dixon cites the 1977 edition and Part 2 of 1975), then coated with petro primer paste (manufacturer-stated). Dixon's wrapping notes: wrap spirally with a 15 mm overlap, use 55% for buried applications to give a double layer, start at the bottom on a vertical pipe, smooth the overlaps by hand, and use a 50 mm roll-to-roll overlap when starting a new roll (manufacturer-stated).

Selecting the right option

Choose the width to suit the pipe diameter, then order the primer paste with it, because Dixon says the surface should be coated with primer paste to fill hollows and give good contact. Use the mastic on valves and flanges. Where the wrap needs mechanical protection, add the overwrap tape linked below.
