KCP Taper Grid Coupling Grid Element 1020H-G, 47.7 Nm

The grid is the flexible part of a KCP taper grid coupling, in sizes 1020H to 1150H. It sits between the two hubs in the grooves cut in the hub teeth, which lets the coupling take up parallel and angular misalignment and end float, and gives torsional flexibility under changing load.

A complete coupling uses two hubs, one grid and one cover. The cover comes as a horizontal split aluminium cover (Type H) or a vertical split steel cover (Type V).

Selecting the right option

To size the coupling, work out the design torque. In metric terms this is roughly 9,550 x kW / rpm x service factor, in Nm (the catalogue gives 97,400 x kW / rpm x service factor in kg-cm, or 71,620 x hp / rpm x service factor). Use the lowest operating speed of the application. Where the drive reverses repeatedly or the load changes often and irregularly, the catalogue says to double the service factor.

Choose the size whose basic torque is equal to or above the design torque, then check the shaft diameters against the maximum bore of that size. If the bore is too small, step up to the next size. Check the maximum speed for the size and cover type as well.

Fitting and use

Grease the grid and the hub teeth before the covers are fitted, then fill the assembled coupling with grease through the lube plug. The lubricant weight needed for each size is in the table in the catalogue page and in the Model Details on this page.
