Selecting the right option
Match chisel width to the task — wider chisels for broad flat cuts, narrower for precision cuts and splitting. Use with an appropriate hammer weight; too light a hammer requires excessive strikes, too heavy a hammer reduces control. Chrome vanadium steel (CRV) chisels are harder and hold an edge longer than plain carbon steel; they must be used correctly as they can be brittle if misused with oversized hammers.
