Selecting the right option
Double pitch chain has twice the pitch of the matching standard chain. S roller types are standard rollers and R types are oversize carrier rollers.
Choose Aqua-Proof where carbon steel chain would rust but you still need carbon steel strength. For food contact, or anywhere coating flakes or wear dust could reach food, use stainless steel chain instead, as Sugiyama recommends.
Fitting and use
Tensile strength is the load at which the chain breaks in a single pull and is not a working load. Sugiyama's rule of thumb is to never load roller chain above 50% of its ultimate tensile strength, even for one cycle, and to apply the multiple-strand factor to multiple-strand chain.
Sugiyama's guide: manual lubrication below 15 m/min chain speed, drip lubrication from 15 to 30 m/min, and oil bath from 30 m/min.
Do not use Aqua-Proof chain where it can contact food directly, or where coating flakes or wear dust could contaminate food. Use stainless steel chain for those jobs.
Where a single-pitch offset link is used, Sugiyama's published load figures allow for a 35% reduction in fatigue strength.
Chain drives should be guarded. Lock out machine power before removing, installing or servicing chain, wear eye protection when driving or grinding pins, avoid welding or plating assembled chain, and never repair damaged chain by replacing only some of its parts.
Sugiyama's Aqua-Proof brochure shows AP chain outperforming zinc and nickel plated chain in a salt-water spray test to JIS Z 2371 / ISO 9227 over 336 hours.
