Fast, Clean Sanding on Metal, Wood and Composites with Hook & Loop Sanding Discs

Hook and loop sanding discs — are backed with a hook-and-loop (Velcro®-style) fastening system that attaches directly to the backing pad of a random orbital sander or dual-action (DA) sander, allowing fast disc changes without adhesive and enabling the same disc to be removed and reused across multiple sessions.

In industrial metalworking, fabrication and maintenance applications, hook and loop sanding discs are used for surface preparation before painting or coating, weld blending and spatter removal, rust and scale removal, burr removal and edge blending, and fine finishing on sheet metal, aluminium and stainless.

AIMS Industrial sells dozens of hook and loop sanding disc products from Pferd, Abbott & Ashby, Klingspor and Linishall — specialist abrasive brands with a strong presence in the Australian engineering, fabrication and surface finishing markets.

The Hook & Loop Sanding Discs Range

Our product range covers hook and loop sanding discs in standard diameters (typically 115mm, 125mm and 150mm) across the full grit range from coarse stock removal to fine finishing, in aluminium oxide, zirconia and ceramic abrasive types for metal, wood and composite applications.

  • Pferd: Pferd supplies premium hook and loop sanding discs as part of their comprehensive surface finishing range. Pferd’s abrasive discs are engineered for metalworking applications, with formulations optimised for steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Pferd’s discs provide consistent, long-lasting performance in demanding fabrication and maintenance environments.
  • Abbott & Ashby: Abbott & Ashby supplies hook and loop sanding discs across a broad range of grits and diameters. Abbott & Ashby is a well-established Australian abrasive distributor supplying quality grinding and sanding products to the engineering, automotive and woodworking trades.
  • Klingspor: Klingspor supplies premium hook and loop sanding discs for industrial metalworking and woodworking applications. Klingspor is a German abrasive manufacturer recognised for high-quality, long-lasting abrasive products with consistent grit distribution and coating quality across their product range.
  • Linishall: Linishall supplies hook and loop sanding discs for surface finishing applications. Linishall is an Australian abrasive brand supplying grinding and finishing consumables to the engineering and fabrication trades.

Choosing the Right Hook & Loop Sanding Disc

Hook and loop sanding disc selection depends on the diameter of the backing pad, the grit required for the job, and the abrasive type suited to the workpiece material.

  • Diameter: Match the disc diameter exactly to your sander’s backing pad — 125mm discs for 125mm pads, 150mm for 150mm pads. Using the wrong diameter reduces disc life and produces an uneven surface finish.
  • Grit Selection: Coarse grits (40–80) remove material quickly for rust removal, weld blending and heavy stock removal. Medium grits (100–180) are used for surface preparation and scratch removal. Fine grits (220+) are used for pre-paint finishing and final scratch refinement. Always step through grits progressively rather than jumping from coarse to fine.
  • Abrasive Type: Aluminium oxide is the standard general-purpose abrasive for steel, wood and composites. Zirconia alumina provides longer disc life on steel and stainless steel in heavy stock removal. Ceramic abrasive provides the highest performance and longest life on hard metals and high-alloy steels, justifying a higher unit cost in production environments.
  • Hole Pattern: Many sanding discs include dust extraction holes that align with the ports on the backing pad and dust bag. Using discs matched to your sander’s hole pattern significantly improves dust extraction efficiency, extending disc life and reducing airborne dust in the workplace.
