Hook and loop sanding discs — are backed with a hook-and-loop (Velcro®-style) fastening system that attaches directly to the backing pad of a random orbital sander or dual-action (DA) sander, allowing fast disc changes without adhesive and enabling the same disc to be removed and reused across multiple sessions.

Choosing the Right Hook & Loop Sanding Disc

Hook and loop sanding disc selection depends on the diameter of the backing pad, the grit required for the job, and the abrasive type suited to the workpiece material.

• Diameter: Match the disc diameter exactly to your sander’s backing pad — 125mm discs for 125mm pads, 150mm for 150mm pads. Using the wrong diameter reduces disc life and produces an uneven surface finish.
• Grit Selection: Coarse grits (40–80) remove material quickly for rust removal, weld blending and heavy stock removal. Medium grits (100–180) are used for surface preparation and scratch removal. Fine grits (220+) are used for pre-paint finishing and final scratch refinement. Always step through grits progressively rather than jumping from coarse to fine.
• Abrasive Type: Aluminium oxide is the standard general-purpose abrasive for steel, wood and composites. Zirconia alumina provides longer disc life on steel and stainless steel in heavy stock removal. Ceramic abrasive provides the highest performance and longest life on hard metals and high-alloy steels, justifying a higher unit cost in production environments.
• Hole Pattern: Many sanding discs include dust extraction holes that align with the ports on the backing pad and dust bag. Using discs matched to your sander’s hole pattern significantly improves dust extraction efficiency, extending disc life and reducing airborne dust in the workplace.
