Quick Change Discs

Quick change discs (Roloc-style abrasive discs) attach to a backing pad with a quarter-turn locking mechanism — the operator can swap discs in seconds without spanners, threaded backings, or complex hardware. For surface preparation, weld cleaning, paint and rust removal, and general material removal, quick change discs are the right tool when you'll be cycling through multiple grits or disc types in the same job. AIMS Industrial stocks quick change discs in the standard sizes and grit ranges Australian workshops use.

The disc types we stock

  • Cleaning and stripping discs — non-woven nylon impregnated with abrasive grit for paint, rust, and coating removal
  • Surface conditioning discs — finer non-woven discs for finishing, blending, and surface preparation
  • Coated abrasive discs — sanding discs in various grits for material removal
  • Cutting and grinding discs — for material removal and fast cleanup
  • Wire brush discs — for heavy paint and rust stripping in quick-change format

Mounting systems — TR versus TS

Two main mounting standards dominate the quick-change market: TR (Type R, Roloc-style) and TS (Type S, threaded). TR discs attach with a quarter-turn locking thread that locks under load; TS discs use a fine helical thread similar to standard sanding pads. Within each system, sizes are typically 50mm (2 inch) and 75mm (3 inch). Not interchangeable between systems — TR backing pads need TR discs and vice versa.

Disc sizing

  • 50mm (2 inch) — the everyday size for detail work, restricted access, and finer finishing
  • 75mm (3 inch) — for larger area work where the bigger disc covers more ground per pass
  • 100mm (4 inch) — for the largest quick-change applications, primarily on dedicated quick-change tools

Where quick change earns its place

  • Production surface preparation — high-cycle work where seconds saved per disc change compound across the day
  • Multi-grit jobs — applications that progress through coarse, medium, and fine grits
  • Mixed-tool work — switching between cleaning, surface conditioning, and abrasive discs on the same tool
  • Detail work — small disc sizes that can't easily be mounted with conventional locknuts

Brands stocked at AIMS

Norton, Pferd, and Klingspor cover the quick change disc range — established abrasive manufacturers chosen for grit retention, backing strength, and consistent performance. The matching backing pads from the same manufacturers ensure proper disc retention and balance. Cheap unbranded discs often have poor grit adhesion and short service life — false economy in production work.

Tool requirements

Quick change discs need a matching backing pad on a tool that runs at the disc's rated speed. Air die grinders, electric die grinders, and dedicated quick-change tools all work — match the tool's speed to the disc's rated maximum RPM. Running discs faster than rated is dangerous (the disc can come off the backing or fail in service).

Companion ranges

Quick change discs sit alongside our broader abrasives range — flap discs, fibre discs, sanding discs, and grinding wheels. For complete abrasive setups, contact our team to discuss the application.
