Choosing a bench grinder or linisher
Start with the job. A wheel grinder suits tool sharpening, edge forming and general stock removal. A belt grinder or linishing attachment suits flat surfaces, deburring and blending welds, and a combination machine gives you both on one bench. Wheel diameter sets how much wheel you have to work with: 6 inch (150mm) is common for sharpening and light work, 8 inch (200mm) suits heavier stock removal, and 10 inch (250mm) is there for bigger duty. Motor size, single or three phase supply and whether you want a pedestal or a bench mount will narrow it down further.
Wheels, dressers, spindles and replacement switches are listed under bench grinder spares. Our bench grinder guide covers wheels, grit and safe use in more detail.
Always check the data sheet. Confirm the wheel size, speed, voltage and phase against your site and the wheels you plan to fit. Before you mount a wheel, inspect it for damage and check that its maximum rated speed suits the grinder, then run the machine with guards and eyeshields fitted and wear eye and face protection.

Bench grinder FAQs
What size bench grinder do I need?
A 6 inch (150mm) grinder suits tool sharpening and light work. An 8 inch (200mm) grinder gives you more wheel for heavier stock removal, and the Linishall BG250 is a 10 inch (250mm) machine for bigger duty. Match the wheel size to the work and your bench space.
What is the difference between a bench grinder and a linisher?
A bench grinder uses grinding wheels, which suit sharpening and edge forming. A linisher or belt grinder uses an abrasive belt, which suits flat surfaces, deburring and weld blending. Combination machines and linishing attachments give you both.
Can I add a linishing attachment to my bench grinder?
Linishing attachments are listed for specific machines and belt sizes, such as the Abbott & Ashby AA362 (915 x 50mm) and AA482 (1220 x 50mm) and the Linishall belt grinding attachments. Check the attachment against your grinder before ordering, or call us and we will help.
Do you sell a bench grinder with a pedestal?
Yes. The Abbott & Ashby range includes a 6 inch 280W grinder with a heavy duty pedestal and an 8 inch 600W grinder with E-stop and pedestal. Pedestals and E-stop kits are also sold separately under bench grinder spares.
What sizes do the Linishall belt grinders come in?
The Linishall bench mounted and pedestal mounted belt grinders are listed in several sizes and motor options, and the heavy duty model in larger sizes. Check the variant before ordering, or call us and we will help you match one to your work.
What should I check before fitting a new wheel?
Inspect the wheel for cracks or damage, confirm its maximum rated speed suits the grinder, fit the guards and eyeshields, and wear eye and face protection. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your machine.
