Cure times, temperature limits, fluid compatibility and approvals vary by product. Always check the data sheet for the one you are using.
Choosing a Sealant
Start with the joint
Threaded joints need a thread sealant or tape. Flat flanges and covers need a gasket sealant. Gaps in buildings and structures need a silicone, MS or foam product. Work out which of these you have first, then narrow down by the material, the fluid and the temperature.
Thread sealant or PTFE tape?
PTFE tape is quick, has no cure time and is easy to use on general pipe threads. Anaerobic thread sealants such as Loctite 577 or 567 fill the thread more completely and don't loosen under vibration. For gas, only use a product whose data sheet and approvals say it is suitable, and have the work done by a licensed gas fitter. See the Loctite Thread Sealant Guide.
Anaerobic or silicone for flanges?
Anaerobic flange sealants such as Loctite 510 and 518 suit close-fitting, rigid metal faces. RTV silicones suit flexible flanges and larger gaps. Our RTV Silicone Gasket Maker Guide explains the difference.
Prepare the surface
Most sealant failures start with a dirty or damp surface. Clean, degrease and dry the joint, remove old material, and follow the cure time before pressurising. See Adhesive Removers for cleaning up old sealant.

People Also Ask — Sealants
What is the difference between a thread sealant and PTFE tape?
PTFE tape is a thin film wrapped around the thread. It is simple, has no cure time and suits general pipe threads. Anaerobic thread sealants fill the thread gaps completely, cure when confined between metal surfaces, and resist vibration. See Thread Sealants.
What is an anaerobic sealant?
It is a liquid that stays uncured in air and cures when confined between close-fitting metal parts. Loctite 510 and 518 are flange sealants of this type, and Loctite 542, 567 and 577 are thread sealants. The joint needs to be clean for a good cure.
Can I use any sealant on gas fittings?
No. Use only a product whose data sheet and approvals state it is suitable for gas, and have gas fitting work carried out by a licensed gas fitter.
Should I use a cut gasket or a liquid sealant on a flange?
It depends on the flange and the service. Liquid sealants suit close-fitting machined faces such as engine and gearbox covers. Pipe flanges in most services use a cut gasket. Follow the equipment maker's recommendation. See Gasket Sealants.
How long does silicone sealant take to cure?
It forms a skin first and cures through over time, and this depends on bead size, temperature and humidity. Check the data sheet and don't load or pressurise the joint until it is fully cured.
Which brands of sealant does AIMS stock?
Loctite, CRC, GSA, Epirez, Hansa, OSI, Ultraloc, Sanvo, Henkel and Unasco.
