This range covers general bonding on the maintenance bench and the production line: instant (cyanoacrylate) adhesives, two-part epoxies and putties, structural acrylics, contact and spray adhesives, and an MS adhesive sealant. The bulk of it is Loctite, with products from CRC, Devcon, Gorilla, Q-Bond, Permatex and Epirez. Our Industrial Adhesive Types Guide and Epoxy Adhesive Guide explain how the chemistries differ.

Choosing an Adhesive

Instant adhesives

Instant adhesives cure from the trace moisture on the surfaces and suit tight-fitting joints in metal, plastic and rubber. The toughened grades (Loctite 435 and 438) are made for parts that see some peel or impact, and Loctite 424 is aimed at plastic and rubber. Loctite 406 is the surface-insensitive option for hard-to-bond plastics and rubbers. See the Loctite 454 Guide and Loctite 480 Guide for two of the common grades.

Epoxy or instant adhesive?

If the joint has a gap, takes load, or needs to resist heat or chemicals, epoxy is usually the better choice. It takes longer to cure but fills gaps and gives a stronger bond. Epoxy putties such as Loctite 3471 and CRC Minute Mend can be shaped by hand for filling and rebuilding.

Prepare the surface

Clean, degrease and dry both surfaces. Some plastics and metals need a primer or activator, which we stock separately in Activators, Cleaners & Primers. Check the data sheet for what your materials need.

People Also Ask — Adhesives

What is the difference between super glue and epoxy?

Super glue (cyanoacrylate) cures in seconds on close-fitting parts and has little gap-filling ability. Epoxy is a two-part system that takes longer to cure, fills gaps and gives a stronger bond. See our Epoxy Adhesive Guide.

Do I need a primer or activator?

Sometimes. Low-energy plastics such as polyolefins and some metals can be difficult to bond with instant adhesives, and a primer or activator may be needed. Check the data sheet for your adhesive and materials, and see Activators, Cleaners & Primers.

What is the best adhesive for metal to metal?

It depends on the load and the gap. Loctite 324 Speedbonder and Loctite 330 are structural acrylics, and epoxies such as Loctite 3463 or Permatex Steel Weld suit repairs and gap filling. Clean, degreased metal is as important as the product.

Which adhesive suits rubber and plastic?

Loctite 424 is made for plastic and rubber, and Loctite 406 is the surface-insensitive grade. Test on a scrap piece first, and check the data sheet for compatibility with your specific plastic.

How long before I can load a bonded joint?

Handling time and full cure time differ for every product, and low temperatures slow them down. Check the data sheet and allow full cure before loading the joint.

How should I store adhesives?

Keep them sealed, in a cool, dry place, and check the use-by date before use. Instant adhesives are sensitive to moisture once opened.
