Black Rat 4WD Safety Recovery Damper, Yellow with Reflective Tape (340074RD)

The Black Rat 4WD safety recovery damper, code 340074RD, is a yellow damper with reflective tape for use when a cable or strap is under load in a recovery. Beaver's website says it is an essential item for four wheel drive owners who use a cable or strap for recovery, and that it is designed to absorb energy from the cable or strap in the event of a failure, which reduces recoil and the risk of harm or damage to equipment (manufacturer-stated).

Black Rat's data sheet gives a folded size of 500 x 440 mm and a weight of 1.0 kg, and Beaver's page lists long internal velcro strips to reduce slipping (manufacturer-stated). Black Rat's data sheet for its off road snatch block also recommends using a recovery damper in case of overload (manufacturer-stated).

A damper reduces recoil but does not stop a failed cable or strap from moving, so keep people well clear of a recovery under load. Beaver's page gives no load rating, working load limit or standard for the damper, and AIMS does not hold a test report for it. Ask AIMS before you order if you need that information.

Recovery gear should be matched to the vehicles and the job, inspected before every use, and not used if it is cut, frayed, worn or damaged. Keep people well clear of any recovery that is under load, and follow the manufacturer's instructions. If you are not sure what suits your recovery, ask AIMS before you order.

Key specifications

Selecting the right option

Place the damper over the cable or strap near its middle, so it can absorb energy if the line fails, and keep people well clear of the recovery. Black Rat's snatch block data sheet says to use a damper in case of overload (manufacturer-stated). A damper does not replace correctly rated gear, so choose straps, shackles and anchor points that suit the vehicles involved.
