CRC Rust Converter 250ml

CRC Rust Converter is a rust converter for lightly rusted metal surfaces. CRC's liquid data sheet says it rapidly neutralises rust and turns rust into a black surface ready for priming, with no sandblasting or grinding required. It is listed here as 250ml, 1L and 5L liquid packs and a 425g aerosol.

CRC lists it for cars, truck frames and beds, boats and trailers, railings, fences, iron or steel furniture, equipment and tools. It is not a rust preventative coating, and the liquid and aerosol have different safety classifications, listed below.

Selecting the right option

For the liquid packs, CRC says that for long-term results the converted surface should be coated with CRC Metal Armour as a protective primer coat. CRC's aerosol data sheet names CRC Prep It and CRC Coloured Zinc as overcoats.

The liquid is applied by brush, roller or sprayer and is not classified as dangerous goods. The aerosol is an extremely flammable aerosol, UN 1950.

Using it

Preparation (CRC): remove blistered, loose paint, other coatings and loose or heavy rust scale with a scraper or mechanical sander. Remove dirt, grease and oil from the surrounding surfaces and mask the surrounding area. Rubber gloves are recommended. Apply only at 10°C to 32°C.

Liquid: mix or shake well and pour the estimated amount into a clean container; it cannot be returned to the original container. Work it into the rusted surface with a synthetic bristle brush for maximum penetration, or use a roller or sprayer for large areas. Clean equipment with cold water immediately. Allow at least 12 hours cure before overcoating. Overcoat with an enamel topcoat; with a water-based topcoat, use a stain-blocking primer.

Aerosol (CRC page): shake well. If the first coat does not fully convert the rust, apply a second coat once it is dry. CRC's page and aerosol data sheet give different cure times before overcoating, so check with CRC before topcoating.

Test on a small inconspicuous area first.

Storage and handling

Liquid: store above 5°C and protect from freezing. Aerosol: keep away from heat and ignition sources; check the safety data sheet for storage limits.

Limits and safety

CRC says it may not prevent further rusting when applied to heavy rust scale, is not suitable as a rust preventative coating, should never be used to treat steel that is new or not rusty, and is not designed for non-ferrous metals, galvanised or stainless steel. Liquid packs (250ml, 1L, 5L): Warning. Skin irritation (H315) and serious eye irritation (H319); not classified as dangerous goods. 425g aerosol: Danger. Extremely flammable aerosol (H222), pressurised container that may burst if heated (H229), serious eye irritation (H319), may cause drowsiness or dizziness (H336), and repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking.
