Mackay M172 Conical Bonded Buffer, 50 x 42 mm, 3/8 UNF Stud
Available
The Mackay M172 is a conical bonded buffer with a 3/8 UNF stud. Mackay says conical buffers give inexpensive and effective control of machinery vibration, shock and acoustic noise, and are designed specifically to control impact and torque reaction loads (manufacturer-stated).
The M172 is 50 mm long by 42 mm in diameter, with a 16 mm stud. Mackay's 09/2026 catalogue marks the M172 "Run Out" (manufacturer-stated). The M8 and M10 thread versions are listed separately, as the M172M8 and M173M10 conical buffers.
Where this product is used
- Controlling impact, and snubbing rubbers where excessive shock loads are met in resiliently mounted equipment (manufacturer-stated).
- Controlling impact and torque reaction loads (manufacturer-stated).
- Inexpensive and effective control of machinery vibration, shock and acoustic noise (manufacturer-stated).
Features
- Designed specifically to control impact and torque reaction loads (manufacturer-stated)
- 3/8 UNF stud with a 16 mm stud length in Mackay's drawing (manufacturer-stated)
- Load must be placed on the metal surface and not on the stud (manufacturer-stated)
- Max dynamic load of 220 kg (manufacturer-stated)

Letters follow Mackay's drawing: A is the length, B the diameter, C the stud thread and D the stud length. Max dynamic load, max dynamic deflection and max energy absorption are Mackay's column names.
Selecting the right option
Mackay lists the M172 as "Run Out", so check with Mackay before you plan around it. The M172M8 conical buffer (linked below) has the same body size with an M8 thread, but check the thread, load and deflection figures before you treat them as a replacement. Mackay notes that load must be placed on the metal surface and not on the stud. Mackay prints all properties as nominal and asks you to contact them for technical advice.
