Selecting the right option

For ASA (ANSI) chain the number is the pitch in eighths of an inch: 40 is 4/8 in (1/2 in), 60 is 6/8 in (3/4 in), 100 is 10/8 in (1-1/4 in). The figure after the dash is the number of strands.

Choose H where standard chain of the same pitch is too lightly rated. The plates are one size thicker, and single strand H chain runs on standard sprockets for its pitch. Multiple-strand H chain is not designed for standard sprockets, so check the sprocket before ordering duplex or triplex.

ASA and BS chain of the same pitch are not the same: for example 12.7 mm pitch ASA 40 has a 7.95 mm roller width and 7.92 mm roller, while 12.7 mm pitch BS 08B has a 7.75 mm roller width and 8.51 mm roller (Sugiyama SBR tables). Match the chain to the sprocket standard.

Fitting and use

Tensile strength is the load at which the chain breaks in a single pull and is not a working load. Sugiyama's rule of thumb is to never load roller chain above 50% of its ultimate tensile strength, even for one cycle, and to apply the multiple-strand factor to multiple-strand chain.

Sugiyama's guide: manual lubrication below 15 m/min chain speed, drip lubrication from 15 to 30 m/min, and oil bath from 30 m/min.

Multiple-strand H chain is not designed to run on standard roller chain sprockets (single strand H does).

Where a single-pitch offset link is used, Sugiyama's published load figures allow for a 35% reduction in fatigue strength.

Chain drives should be guarded. Lock out machine power before removing, installing or servicing chain, wear eye protection when driving or grinding pins, avoid welding or plating assembled chain, and never repair damaged chain by replacing only some of its parts.
