Why LOTO Padlocks Are Different

Safety lockout padlocks are not standard security padlocks. They are purpose-designed for LOTO programs with specific features that general-purpose locks do not provide:

• Non-conductive bodies: Nylon or reinforced plastic bodies prevent electrical conductivity — essential when locking out electrical isolation points where a metal padlock body could pose a shock or arc flash risk.
• Individually keyed: Each padlock in a LOTO program should be keyed uniquely to a specific worker. No other key should open that lock — this is the fundamental principle of personal protection in LOTO procedures.
• Colour coding: Different colours are used to identify different trades, departments, or roles. A common system uses red for electricians, blue for mechanical, yellow for operations — allowing everyone on site to immediately identify who holds each lock.

Keyed-Alike vs Keyed-Differently

Keyed-differently locks are the standard for individual LOTO use — each lock has a unique key that is only held by the worker who owns that lock. Keyed-alike sets are sometimes used by supervisors who need the ability to remove locks in emergency situations (under a strictly controlled process), or for group lockout procedures where multiple workers share a station lock. The keying configuration should be determined by your site's LOTO procedure.

Group lockout procedures use a hasp — a scissor-type device that holds multiple padlocks simultaneously. Each worker places their own lock on the hasp; the hasp cannot be opened until all locks are removed. This ensures that no worker's personal lock can be removed by another — every individual must sign off before the isolation can be cleared.
