Black Rat 4WD Towing Kit, 4 m Polyester Strap, 12,000 kg MBS, Carry Bag (342309BK)

The Black Rat 4WD towing kit, code 342309BK, is a 4 m polyester snatch strap supplied in a vinyl carry bag. Black Rat's data sheet says the strap has a built in elasticised retention cord that uses polyester load bearing fibres of the kind used in round slings, and black reinforced eye protection at each end (manufacturer-stated). It gives a minimum breaking strain (MBS) of 12,000 kg and a stretch factor of 30% of its original length, which Black Rat says lets the user slowly pull or move a vehicle out of a problem situation (manufacturer-stated).

Black Rat says that if the strap is pulled to its breaking strain the inner fibres bunch up and do not spring back, which it says eliminates the slingshot effect seen in a nylon snatch strap (manufacturer-stated). AIMS has no test report for that claim, so treat any snatch strap under load as dangerous and keep people well clear.

The data sheet gives a weight of 3.5 kg and a pack quantity of 1. Beaver's page lists no standard for this kit. The ACCC's mandatory standard for motor vehicle recovery straps requires a permanent warning label on the strap, the supplier's name or logo, a batch code or serial number and the minimum breaking strength in metric units, and says the strap must be supplied with instructions. It also requires advice that the minimum breaking strength should be 2 to 3 times the vehicle's gross vehicle mass (GVM) and that the strap must suit the lighter of the two vehicles. Check that the strap you receive carries these markings. Ask AIMS whether the kit supplied carries these markings before you order.

Recovery gear should be matched to the vehicles and the job, inspected before every use, and not used if it is cut, frayed, worn or damaged.
