Loctite 424 Instant Adhesive for Plastic & Rubber 25ml
Available
Loctite 424 is a one-part, low viscosity ethyl cyanoacrylate instant adhesive. It cures with moisture and needs no mixing. Its key substrates are plastics and rubbers, with enhanced performance on EPDM and other elastomers.
At 22 °C and 50% RH it fixtures in under 5 seconds on neoprene and nitrile rubber and in 15 to 30 seconds on degreased mild steel. It suits thin bond gaps.
Where this product is used
- Bonding plastics such as ABS, PVC, polycarbonate and phenolic
- Bonding rubbers such as neoprene and nitrile rubber
- EPDM and other elastomers
- Thin bond lines, where Henkel recommends a 0.05 mm gap

Selecting the right option
Loctite 424 is the grade to look at for rubbers, especially EPDM. For plastics and rubbers with a thinner liquid, see Loctite 406 Instant Adhesive for Plastics and Rubbers; for a general purpose grade that also covers metals and porous materials, see Loctite 401 Instant Adhesive.
For a rubber-toughened grade, see Loctite 435 Toughened Instant Adhesive 25ml.
Using it
Henkel says the product suits thin bond gaps (0.05 mm). Thin bond lines cure faster and wider gaps slow the cure.
Fixture times in the Henkel data sheet are the time to 0.1 N/mm² shear at 22 °C and 50% RH, and vary by substrate.
Full chemical and solvent resistance takes at least 24 hours.
Storage and handling
Store unopened, in a dry place, at 2 °C to 8 °C. Storage below 2 °C or above 8 °C can adversely affect the properties of the product.
Limits and safety
Not recommended for pure oxygen or oxygen-rich systems, or as a sealant for chlorine or other strong oxidising materials. The Henkel data sheet states no operating temperature range; the hot strength graph runs from -50 °C to 150 °C. The data sheet is dated May-2004. Read the safety data sheet before use.
Frequently asked questions
How should Loctite 424 be stored?
Unopened, in a dry place at 2 °C to 8 °C. Storage below 2 °C or above 8 °C can adversely affect its properties.
How fast does Loctite 424 fixture on rubber?
Under 5 seconds on neoprene and nitrile rubber (22 °C, 50% RH, time to 0.1 N/mm² shear). Degreased mild steel takes 15 to 30 seconds.
What bond gap suits Loctite 424?
Henkel says it suits thin bond gaps (0.05 mm). Henkel's AU product page lists a gap fill of 0.15 mm, which is not in the data sheet.
Will Loctite 424 work on EPDM?
Loctite 424 provides enhanced performance on EPDM and other elastomers, according to the Henkel data sheet.
What is the steel lap shear strength of Loctite 424?
18 to 26 N/mm² on grit-blasted steel (ISO 4587, 24 hours at 22 °C).
How does Loctite 424 hold up against fuel and solvents?
After 1,000 hours it keeps 100% of its initial strength in gasoline, isopropanol and ethanol, and 95% in motor oil at 40 °C.
