Industrial Abrasives Selection — Quick Reference
AIMS stocks 1,100+ abrasives across cutting, grinding, sanding, deburring, polishing applications. Selection turns on operation (cut/grind/finish), substrate (steel/stainless/non-ferrous/timber), abrasive grain (Al2O3/SiC/Zirconia/Ceramic/Diamond), and format (disc/belt/sheet/wheel/burr).
| Abrasive Category | Use For | Common Format |
|---|---|---|
| Cut-Off Discs | Cutting steel + stainless + thin-wall | 100mm – 350mm, T41 flat / T42 depressed |
| Grinding Wheels (Bench) | Tool sharpening, off-hand grinding, deburring | 150-200mm × 25mm bore + 32mm bore |
| Flap Discs | Blending, deburring, surface prep on steel + stainless | 115mm / 125mm angle grinder, Z40-Z120 |
| Sanding Belts | Linishing, file belts, portable belt sanders, floor sanding | Per machine spec — wide format range |
| Sanding Sheets / Rolls | Hand + machine sanding metal/timber/paint | Half/third/quarter sheets, 230×280mm standard |
| Mounted Points | Die grinder internal grinding + deburring | 3mm + 6mm shank, multiple shape codes |
| Carbide Burrs | Heavy material removal + casting flash + weld blend | 3mm + 6mm shank, shape codes A through N |
| Sharpening + Honing Stones | Tool edge restoration, knife sharpening | Bench + hand + slip stones |
| Wire Brushes (Wheel + Cup) | Rust + scale + weld slag removal | Twist knot, crimped, end brush |
| Polishing Compounds + Mops | Final finishing + buffing | Mop wheels + compound bars |
Critical RPM rule: Every abrasive has a maximum safe RPM — match to tool spec. Exceeding RPM = explosive failure. Material match: Al2O3 for steel | SiC for non-ferrous + cast iron + stone | Zirconia for heavy stock removal | Ceramic for hardened + production. Brands: Norton, Pferd, Klingspor, Flexovit. Companion: cut-off discs, grinding wheels, flap discs, sanding belts, sanding sheets, mounted points, burrs.

People Also Ask — Abrasives (Comprehensive)
Q: What types of abrasives does AIMS stock?
Grinding wheels (bench, surface, cutting, cup), cutting discs (mild steel, stainless 'inox'), flap discs (zirconia, ceramic, aluminium oxide), fibre discs (resin fibre), sanding belts and sleeves, sanding discs (PSA, hook-and-loop), sandpaper sheets and rolls, wire wheels and brushes, mounted points (small abrasive shapes for die grinders), buffing pads, and specialty abrasives. Brand mix includes Norton, Klingspor, 3M, Pferd, Flexovit, sia, Sutton, and others. See [Cutting Disc Guide](/blogs/product-guides/cutting-disc-guide), [Grinding Disc Guide](/blogs/product-guides/grinding-disc-guide), and [Flap Disc Guide](/blogs/product-guides/flap-discs-abrasives-grit-types-selection-aims-industrial).
Q: Cutting disc or grinding disc — what's the difference?
Cutting disc: thin (1-3mm), designed for cutting only (face-on use), high RPM rating. Side-loading a cutting disc is dangerous — disc shatters. Grinding disc: thicker (6-8mm), designed for grinding (side-on use), can be face-loaded for cutting in light applications. For dedicated cutting: use cutting disc. For grinding and stock removal: use grinding disc. Don't substitute one for the other — incorrect use causes wheel failure with risk of operator injury.
Q: What's the right abrasive for stainless?
Stainless-specific abrasives (marked 'Inox' or 'Stainless') are formulated WITHOUT iron, sulphur, and chloride contamination — using standard mild-steel abrasives on stainless leaves iron contamination that corrodes rapidly. For stainless: dedicated cutting discs, flap discs, fibre discs, and grinding wheels. Material: zirconia or ceramic abrasive (cuts cleaner than aluminium oxide on stainless). Always use stainless-rated abrasives on stainless work — the small cost premium prevents expensive corrosion problems.
Q: How do I select abrasive grit?
Match grit to the cut required: P36-P60 for heavy stock removal, P80-P120 for general grinding/shaping, P150-P240 for surface refinement, P320-P600 for pre-polish, P800-P1200 for finishing/mirror polish. Step down 1.5-2× per progression — don't skip grits or visible scratch pattern remains. For most workshop daily use, stock P60, P80, P120, and P240 covers most needs. Add finer grits for finishing work.
Q: Safety equipment for abrasive work?
Eye protection (safety glasses minimum, face shield for grinding/cutting), hearing protection (angle grinders are loud at sustained use), cut-resistant gloves (rated to AS/NZS 2161), respiratory protection or dust extraction (grinding generates fine metal dust harmful to lungs), and fire-resistant workwear (sparks ignite clothing). For sustained abrasive work, dedicated dust extraction at the source recommended. Disc inspection before each use — replace discs that have been dropped or look damaged.
